Patternmakers, Metal and Plastic

Lay out, machine, fit, and assemble castings and parts to metal or plastic foundry patterns, core boxes, or match plates.

Job Task

• Lays out and draws or scribes pattern onto material, using compass, protractor, ruler, scribe, or other instruments.
• Cuts, trims, shapes, and forms patterns or templates, using hand tools and power tools.
• Sets up and operates machine tools, such as milling machines, lathes, drill presses, and grinders, to machine castings or pattern.
• Designs and develops template or pattern according to work orders, sample parts, or mockups.
• Verifies conformance of pattern or template dimensions to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, scales, and micrometers.
• Operates welding equipment to weld pattern together.
• Cleans and fine finishes pattern or template, using emery cloth, files, scrapers, and power grinders.
• Marks identification numbers or symbols onto pattern or template.
• Constructs platforms, fixtures, and jigs for holding and placing patterns.
• Covers or sprays pattern used in producing plastic with plastic-impregnated fabric or coat of sealing lacquer or wax.
• Makes templates or files for own use in inspection and finishing of particular shape.
• Repairs and reworks templates and patterns.
• Assembles pattern sections, using hand tools, bolts, screws, rivets, or glue.
• Studies blueprint of part to be cast or pattern to be made, computes dimensions, and plans sequence of operations.
