Ship Engineers

Supervise and coordinate activities of crew engaged in operating and maintaining engines, boilers, deck machinery, and electrical, sanitary, and refrigeration equipment aboard ship.

Job Task

  • Orders crew to repair or replace defective parts of engines and other equipment.
  • Inspects engines and other equipment.
  • Stands engine-room watch, observing that lubricants and water levels are maintained in machinery and load on generators is within limits.
  • Starts engines to propel ship and regulates engines and power transmission to control speed of ship.
  • Maintains engineering log and bellbook (orders of changes in speed and direction of ship).
  • Repairs machinery, using hand tools and power tools.
